During the war years, Joseph Solman spent his days supporting the war effort working in New Jersey shipyards and as a draftsman for Pratt and Whitney Aircraft. In the evenings, as a relief from the dry precision of his work, he embarked on a long-cherished project: “imaginative sketches of my idol in music, Mozart.” From among more than thirty watercolors of the composer’s profile, Solman, with the expert help of Leonard Pytlak, silk-screened the twelve finest. These original drawings are part of the body of Solman’s sketches, studies, and drawings which led to that folio. They are wonderful portraits of Mozart and unique snapshots in the development of Solman’s work.
