Morning Grass

Description

This work is an excellent example of Mark Tobey’s “white writing”.

In the late 1930s, Tobey developed a style of work that used the layering of numerous transparent and opaque brushstrokes within the composition. Initially, the lines were part of a figurative composition that highlighted realistic elements.  Eventually, though, the technique evolved into an inward type of meditative abstraction that covered the entire composition.  This style marked an important development in abstraction, highlighting the journey from true abstraction to the lines, shapes, colors, and light independently forming the work.
