Description

Jules Georges Redon was a figural artist known for his humorous portrayals of children and animals.  He also produced numerous posters, many of which remain treasured parts of French history.  He did a great deal of work for the cabarets and restaurants in his Montmartre neighborhood, including humorous covers for menus.

This work likely was created to serve as a menu cover—desirable for the restaurant owner who wanted to motivate customers to purchase wine instead of water!

The text to the lower margin reads “Ne buvez jamais d’eau” [“Never drink the water”].
