Jules Georges Redon was a figural artist known for his humorous portrayals of children and animals.  He also produced numerous posters, many of which remain treasured parts of French history.  He did a great deal of work for the cabarets and restaurants in his Montmartre neighborhood, including humorous covers for menus, such as this.

The text to the lower margin reads “la poule mange les escargots” [“The Hen Eats the Snails”].
