Description

Clayton Pond is an extraordinary artist, whose rich imagination is surpassed only by the richness of the ink on his serigraphs. The inventor of an entirely new way of producing serigraphs (commonly referred to as “silkscreens”), he achieves an incomparable glossiness and luminosity.  He invented a method of stenciling whereby he gradually reduced the openings in the same stencil for each subsequent color. Pond’s printing process gave his prints a tactile relief surface by printing each new color layered on top of the previous one.  Pond made this work for ARTIST’S PROOF, A Journal of American Printmaking, published by Pratt Institute.  It was an enormous honor for the then-very-young artist to be asked to make the frontispiece for the journal.  ARTIST’S PROOF was then the preeminent journal for contemporary printmaking and was subscribed to by art collectors, art schools, galleries, and museums.
