French artist Max Papart’s images of circuses and performers were central to his oeuvre. His works almost always show the sunny humor and bright colors of the French Riviera, where he was born. His subject matter invariably cheerful and fun. His style is Cubist—interesting enough to keep your attention and imagination.
But few people own a work by Papart without recognizing that his work is not mere frivolity. Not only was he an important innovator in art, but he was driven by his aim, “to increase my expression through the use of pictorial symbols that are strong and that also speak in a universal language.”
