Norval Morrisseau is not merely an extraordinary artist. He was the founder of an entire art movement and he is central to the native art community in Canada.
Morrisseau’s work focuses on the ancient myths and legends of the eastern woodlands, creating images out of the oral tradition of his people who were nestled in remote isolation in northern Ontario. In particular, he took the received tradition from his grandfather, who schooled him in Ojibwa shamanism.
Morrisseau is a highly-decorated artist, with work in prominent museums and private collections. He has received an honorary degree from the Royal Academy of Arts and is a member of The Order Of Canada, the highest civilian honor in Canada.
