Christmas Cats

$650.00

Description

In 1934, when Henry Wadsworth Moore was about 55 years old, he sent someone a Christmas card, hand-drawn with pen and ink, depicting a mother cat on a cushion with four playful kittens.  Inscribed on the reverse:  “Xmas 1934 – To the dearest little sweetheart with deepest love and devotion, your own Pop”.

Moore was married to Rosamund Ritchie Moore, and they had three children:  Henry Wadsworth Moore, Jr. (1918-2006); John Latimer Moore (13 Aug 1921 – 5 Sep 2012); and Courtney Moore (16 Mar 1923 – 17 Oct 2004).  Since Courtney would have been 11 at Christmas 1934, it seems likely that this was originally drawn for her.  (Obviously, we do not know that with certainty).

This is a pen and ink drawing; please see the images where you will see two pictures showing evidence of Moore’s pen.
