Beware of the Dog

$2,000.00

Description

Samuel Margolies was an extraordinary story-teller and an extraordinary artist. While he is best known for his pictures of men balancing on girders while building skyscrapers, his true artistry is found in his commentaries on the world around him–as in this work, Beware of the Dog”, depicting a derelict structure, in the shadow of a hire pole filled with electrical wires. The sign, “Beware of the Dog”, being the clearest detail of the work.

“Beware of the Dog” was part of Margolies’ work for the Federal Art Project, for which he worked from 1935 through 1939. The edition size is unknown.

An example of this work is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
