This work is a delightful article of ephemera and art.
This is a self-portrait of Philip Evergood, holding a fountain pen—perhaps the same pen used to draw the picture!—and looking thoughtful, with a hand-written message, “A New Year Commencing!” written on the inside flaps of a Christmas card. With the pre-printed message “Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year” and personalized with “To Ziuta + Brouka with Love & Best wishes”.
This is a beautiful and unique work of art with an intimate personal note. The recipients were plainly very close with Evergood, having accumulated numerous Evergood works, including in several cases two prints of the same work, suggesting that they were intimates or family.
