Description

A very rare Artist’s Proof of a beautiful mezzotint in multiple colors by Mario Avati, one of the greatest masters of the art of mezzotint. Like all Avati works, this work is an exploration of shape and light.

This beautiful mezzotint was printed using two copper plates for the colors and a third copper plate for the black. It was printed in four states. In the first, the yolk of the egg was black. The second state, of which a single print exists, fixed that problem. This impression is from the third state, of which Avati printed 34 impressions (12 sample prints, nine trial proofs, and finally the 13 final proofs, of which this is the eighth. The fourth state was then produced in an edition of 65.
