Fleeing the Nazis, Curt Valentin arrived in New York in 1937 with enough modern German art to open an American office of Buchholz Gallery, where he had worked in Hamburg. Widely respected as one of the most astute dealers in modern art, Valentin organized influential exhibitions and attracted major artists to his Gallery. In 1951, the gallery became the Curt Valentin Gallery.
Jean Arp’sDreams and Projects portfolio, published in 1952, might have been the first of the works Valentin published. The portfolio, printed by Fequet et Baudier in Paris, contains 28 beautiful and evocative woodcut prints. This woodcut is from one of only 25 special sets of the portfolio which were printed on rich and lustrous Japan paper.
