What does “en verso” mean?

You will often see the phrases “en verso” and “en recto” in art descriptions, such as when describing where the work was signed.  What do they mean?!

Simple!  En verso and en recto are Latin terms.  En recto means the front of the work and en verso means the back of the work.

So if someone says that the artwork is signed “en recto lower right,” that means that it was signed on the lower right-hand corner of the front of the work.
